iv) The Centre dispatched an ecotourism expert, Mr. Masaya Kusube, to<br />

BIMP-EAGA to lecture at <strong>the</strong> seminars on “Ecotourism in Japan”.<br />

Additionally, ecotourism experts in <strong>the</strong> respective countries delivered<br />

presentations on <strong>the</strong>ir ecotourism situations, while <strong>the</strong> workshop participants<br />

made presentations on what <strong>the</strong>y had learned in Japan. Panel discussion<br />

was also held at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> seminars.<br />

c) Evaluation<br />

By conducting <strong>the</strong> follow-up seminars, <strong>the</strong> Centre could disseminate<br />

information on ecotourism in Japan <strong>and</strong> BIMP-EAGA to many industry<br />

stakeholders in <strong>the</strong> respective countries.<br />

The seminars were also ideal occasions for <strong>the</strong> exchange <strong>of</strong> views with<br />

local stakeholders on how to leverage tourism resources <strong>and</strong> to improve<br />

approaches, as well as to discuss some concerns regarding ecotourism. Topics<br />

were not always specifically on <strong>the</strong> Japanese market, but covered a wider area.<br />

Additionally, <strong>the</strong> seminar participants included local tourism experts <strong>and</strong><br />

university academians, who could fur<strong>the</strong>r pass on <strong>the</strong> knowledge to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

stakeholders <strong>and</strong> students.<br />

Many participants shared <strong>the</strong> opinion that it was important to protect <strong>the</strong><br />

environment while considering <strong>the</strong> livelihood <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> local community, <strong>and</strong> that<br />

education was <strong>the</strong> key to sustainable development. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m also actively<br />

participated in <strong>the</strong> program by raising questions during <strong>the</strong> Q&A sessions, <strong>and</strong><br />

very lively discussions took place.<br />
