i) Publications
The “ASEAN-Japan Centre News” and “ASEAN-Japan Centre
2010” are among the essential publications produced by the Centre to
introduce the outline and activities of the Centre to Japanese
businesspeople and the general public.
Another publication entitled “ASEAN-Japan Statistics” has gained
popularity and it has become a highly regarded publication among
Japanese businesspeople and associated bodies, owing to the fact that
very few publications are made available which exclusively feature
ASEAN-Japan data and statistics. The data are available online for the
user to download. In addition, limited volumes of the printed version
were also made since the publication has been used regularly by some
business and academic circles as basic reference materials and there are
strong request by various external organizations for a print-and-bind
issue.
Also, “ASEAN,” a brochure targeted at junior high school students,
has continued to be popular. No additional prints were made in FY2010
since there were plenty of stocks, but the brochure has been useful as
an easy reference to introduce the ASEAN Member Countries and
ASEAN-Japan relations and widely read by not only junior high school
students but also by adults. The Centre has received many requests for
the copies to be utilized at school lessons and to be handed out at events.
The Centre also issues the PR e-mail magazines regularly to announce
about events organized in the ASEAN-Japan Hall and other information
that could be of interest to the general public. The subscribers to the
e-mail magazine increased from about 500 in FY2009, to 1,300 by the
end of the FY2010.
ii) PR Activities through Media
Media has served as an effective means to raise the profile of the
Centre and its activities so as to further enhance the understanding of the
ASEAN Member Countries among the general public in Japan.
In addition to the media which the Centre place advertorials annually,
such as the “International Cooperation Guide” (targeting those interested
in pursuing an international career), “Asahi Weekly” (targeting students
and housewives interested in international issues), “Idou Kyoushitu
Nenkan” (to attract more student group visits to the Centre), some new
forms of media were explored in FY2010:
“Let’s Enjoy TOKYO” is an online events information site and the
Centre has placed advertorials of the photo exhibition “Devata – smiles
of the godess” (September 2010) and the “ASEAN Autumn Fair &
Movie Nights” (October 2010) that took place at the ASEAN-Japan Hall.
According to the web page access analysis, the advertorial was the top 7
source to access the event page of the Centre for the photo exhibition.
