I consider how organic coffee f<strong>it</strong>s into the overall economic development<br />

panorama in post–World War II Americas by assessing the general impact of<br />

development programs in poor nations across the globe. I then relate the real<strong>it</strong>y of<br />

organic coffee production as a model for commun<strong>it</strong>y solidar<strong>it</strong>y in my d<strong>is</strong>cussion of class<br />

<strong>and</strong> labor relations on Las Grietas’ organic coffee farms. Maximizing yields <strong>and</strong> premium<br />

qual<strong>it</strong>y are major challenges that relate to the economic, cultural, <strong>and</strong> social ramifications<br />

of small-scale, organic coffee production. The final chapter of Part 2 <strong>is</strong> a d<strong>is</strong>cussion of<br />

the necessary steps to be certified as an organic coffee farmer in the context of San Juan<br />

del Río Coco.<br />
