Agricultural co-ops in Nicaragua started as cred<strong>it</strong> <strong>and</strong> financing ent<strong>it</strong>ies for smallholders<br />

to access preharvest <strong>and</strong> off-season loans. Although many member-only cred<strong>it</strong> unions<br />

still ex<strong>is</strong>t, the four San Juan co-ops evolved from solely cred<strong>it</strong> inst<strong>it</strong>utions into providers<br />

of various services for their members. Today they are legally reg<strong>is</strong>tered as cred<strong>it</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

service cooperatives.<br />

These cooperatives are farmer-owned <strong>and</strong> -operated. <strong>Th<strong>is</strong></strong> means that the UCA,<br />

for example, operates on the membership fees <strong>and</strong> a percentage of the export prof<strong>it</strong>s from<br />

<strong>it</strong>s member farmers. Unfortunately, not all member-farmers see th<strong>is</strong> arrangement as being<br />

accessible to them or attentive to their needs. Repeatedly, farmers referred to “the
