Woodturning ToolsWOODTURNING -A HANDICRAFT OF LONG-STANDING TRADITION NEWLY INTERPRETEDBaSicallY, there are tWO diStinctMethOdS Of tUrning WOOdSpindle turning and faceplate turning.Spindle tUrningHere, the wood fibres run parallel to thespindle axis. You clamp the workpiece eitherwith a spur driver and the revolving centreor with a chuck, which, in the case of longworkpieces, can also be supported by therevolving centre.Examples: chair legs, newels, tool handles, vases, tumblers...Tools: Roughing-out gouges, spindle gouges, chisels, parting tools, hook tools, ring toolsand hollowers.roughing-out gougesA roughing-out gouge is usually required tomake edged workpieces round or to removebulk material.Spindle gougesThe spindle gouge is an all-purpose tool forcutting profiles, recesses, fillets, V slots andcurvatures, which can also give you a highsurface quality.chiselsFor smoothing straight, curved, hollow andslightly profiled surfaces and for cuttingnarrow profiles and notches.parting toolsAs the name implies, parting tools areused for cutting off (parting) finished work.Primary uses also include working on orbackcutting end grain in spindle turning, and cutting grooves.hook toolsThe hook is a versatile tool for hollowingout workpieces. Thanks to the complex bladegeometry, it is equally suitable for bulk woodremoval and finishing end grain.ring toolLike the hook, the ring tool is used forcutting end grain on tumblers and vases. If used correctly, you can achieve finesurfaces with it.hollowersMost hollowers are cranked and thus suitablefor hollowing end grain in vessels with narrowopenings.faceplate tUrningThe wood fibres run perpendicular to thespindle axis, which means you have to workon cross-grain twice per revolution. Workpiecesthat are turned across the grain canbe clamped in chucks, on faceplates or screwchucks. They are rarely supported by thetailstock because it would be obstructiveand the mostly short pieces do not requiresupport. With heavy workpieces, however, tailstock support is recommended at thebeginning.Examples: bowls, boxes, plates...Tools: bowl gouges and scrapers.Tools for faceplate turning are somewhatmore solid than tools for spindle turning toaccommodate the forces during cutting.Bowl gougeUsed in a similar way to the spindle gouge, you can use the bowl gouge to work on theinside and outside of bowls and hollow workpieces.ScrapersScrapers are preferred for finishing surfacesbecause they allow the best surface quality. But this is not their only use – they are alsosuitable for creating profile edges. Some faceplate turning tools can also beused for spindle turning and vice versa. However, this should be left to the experiencedturner because it requires mastering the correcttechniques. Some tools are only suitablefor one purpose. For turning tool sharpening systems seechapter sharpening devices.Sharpening passTwo free sharpenings (see page 3).Sharpening serviceFree lifetime sharpening forPremium products (see page 3).WorkshopsWoodturning Intensive Course,Spindle TurningWoodturning Intensive Course,Faceplate TurningGreen Wood TurningSpindles with Natural EdgeHollow Form with Threaded LidCoring Bowls, Tools and Sharpening130
