Because of its good gripit is suitable for knife and tool handlesand, along with pigments, for makingvaluable paint oils and artists’ colours.The high transparency of poppy-seed oilmakes it the perfect base for violin varnishesand clear protective wood finishes.It provides excellent protection againstmoisture and dirt, does not yellow, andpenetrates deeply into the wood. Poppyseedoil dries much slower than linseedoil. Multiple coats of poppy-seed oil yielda warm, silky gloss and a surface whichis pleasant to the touch. Because of its odour,we do not recommend it for cupboardinteriors. The tung oil offered hereis ecologically sound. It is not preoxidized,nor is it mixed with chemicaldrying agents. Consequently, it takesup to two days to become dry. (Dryingtimes vary considerably depending onthe environmental conditions, type ofwood and preparation of the surface.)Once dry, the oil‘s film is chemicallystable and free of dangerous emissions.Pure tung oil is relatively viscous, butits ability to penetrate can be improvedby thinning with balsam oil of turpentine(No. 705288) or by warming.d LIGNEA ® , TUNG OILHigh-quality naturaloil for indoor andoutdoor use:Lignea, the oil obtainedfrom the fruitsof the tung tree, hasmany uses both indoors and out, e.g.for indoor and outdoor furniture, decks,flooring, turned items, musical instruments,wooden toys and wooden boatsand can be used for impregnating fabricsand even masonry. Tung oil is absorbedby wooden surfaces very quickly andhardens them after it has dried, makingthem mechanically stronger and highlywater-resistant. It provides approximatelytwice as much protection as linseedoil. It deepens colours and enhancesthe contrast of the grain, but the woodretains its natural visual and tactilecharacteristics. The protective film iselastic, even in the long term, and, incontrast to linseed oil, darkens very little.If the finish becomes damaged, it can beeasily retouched by rubbing more oil overthe damaged area.
