Work Ahead: Critical Concerns <strong>and</strong> Key Challenges7.2 Critical ConcernsThe National Governments <strong>in</strong> many <strong>of</strong> the Asian countries, affected by high <strong>Arsenic</strong> <strong>in</strong>groundwater, are try<strong>in</strong>g to meet the challenges with vary<strong>in</strong>g degrees <strong>of</strong> success. The primarytask <strong>of</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Arsenic</strong> safe water to millions <strong>of</strong> people needs to address the follow<strong>in</strong>g criticalconcerns.• Water quality monitor<strong>in</strong>g* District & Block level Capacity Build<strong>in</strong>g.• Identification <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arsenic</strong> contam<strong>in</strong>ated as well as safe sources: both public & private• Provision <strong>of</strong> alternate sources <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arsenic</strong> free safe dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water.• Village specific GIS Database <strong>and</strong> Action Plan <strong>and</strong> shar<strong>in</strong>g the same with allstakeholders.• Establish<strong>in</strong>g a transparent system <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation shar<strong>in</strong>g by all stakeholders* Health Education.* Awareness Generation.• Health Risk Assessment <strong>and</strong> estimation <strong>of</strong> disease burden :• Provision <strong>of</strong> Medical Relief for the critically affected people :* Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Medical Practioners <strong>in</strong> Govt, as well as outside the same.• Long-term change <strong>in</strong> agriculture <strong>and</strong> Irrigation practice:* Restrict<strong>in</strong>g the use <strong>of</strong> <strong>Groundwater</strong>.7.2.1 National St<strong>and</strong>ard for <strong>Arsenic</strong> <strong>in</strong> Dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g WaterIn address<strong>in</strong>g the key-concerns <strong>and</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g a National Plan <strong>of</strong> Action, for provid<strong>in</strong>g<strong>Arsenic</strong> safe water to the community, the 1st key-step is to establish a National St<strong>and</strong>ard for<strong>Arsenic</strong> <strong>in</strong> Dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g Water.The WHO is help<strong>in</strong>g the countries <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g their own national st<strong>and</strong>ards.
