<strong>Arsenic</strong> <strong>Menace</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>India</strong>- An Appraisalformations <strong>in</strong> those areas are <strong>of</strong> thick recent alluvial deposits <strong>of</strong> Quaternary age. <strong>Arsenic</strong>contam<strong>in</strong>ated ground water strata lies largely <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>termediate zone depth that ranges between15m to 50 m.Figure 2.5 : <strong>Groundwater</strong> <strong>Arsenic</strong> Contam<strong>in</strong>ation status <strong>in</strong> West Bengal up to the year 2008.2.3.3.1.1 A detailed study on groundwater arsenic contam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>and</strong> its effects onhealth <strong>in</strong> Murshidabad, one <strong>of</strong> the n<strong>in</strong>e arsenic affected districts <strong>in</strong> West Bengal.A detailed study was conducted by SOES for 3 years <strong>in</strong> Murshidabad, one <strong>of</strong> the n<strong>in</strong>ehighly arsenic affected districts <strong>of</strong> West-Bengal, to know the magnitude <strong>of</strong> arsenic contam<strong>in</strong>ationsituation <strong>and</strong> its effects on health. Murshidabad lies between the latitudes <strong>of</strong> 23 0 43 / 30 // to 24 0 50 /20 // N <strong>and</strong> longitudes <strong>of</strong> 87 0 49 / 17 // to 88 0 44 / E. The river Ganga forms its northern <strong>and</strong> easternboundaries <strong>and</strong> separates it from Bangladesh. The river Bhagirathi flows across the district <strong>and</strong>divides it <strong>in</strong>to two equal parts. The area <strong>and</strong> population <strong>of</strong> the district is 5324 km 2 <strong>and</strong> 58,66,569respectively. There are 26 blocks <strong>in</strong> this district <strong>and</strong> all the 26 blocks were surveyed. A total <strong>of</strong>20NIH & CGWB
