<strong>Mitigation</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Remedy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Groundwater</strong> <strong>Arsenic</strong> <strong>Menace</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>India</strong> : A Vision Document• Long period <strong>of</strong> completion for large capital-<strong>in</strong>tensive government project / lack <strong>of</strong><strong>in</strong>terim relief.• In general, rural populations are largely unaware <strong>of</strong> the technologies developed byvarious <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>and</strong> organizations due to poor promotional activities.• Lack <strong>of</strong> knowledge among the people regard<strong>in</strong>g the health impact <strong>of</strong> the arsenicproblem.• Lack <strong>of</strong> facilities at the grass root level for water quality monitor<strong>in</strong>g.• Lack <strong>of</strong> a transparent system <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation shar<strong>in</strong>g between all stakeholders.7.7 Establish<strong>in</strong>g a Transparent System <strong>of</strong> Information shar<strong>in</strong>g by allStakeholdersThere is an urgent need for awareness generation among the people regard<strong>in</strong>g theproblem <strong>and</strong> efforts undertaken by the Government <strong>and</strong> agencies <strong>in</strong> alleviat<strong>in</strong>g people'ssuffer<strong>in</strong>g. The people <strong>and</strong> Media must have easy access to scientific <strong>in</strong>formation. But under nocircumstances scientific <strong>in</strong>formation should be used for creat<strong>in</strong>g unnecessary panic among thepeople. With a significant proportion <strong>of</strong> the population <strong>of</strong> <strong>India</strong> <strong>and</strong> Bangladesh, <strong>in</strong> extreme social<strong>and</strong> economic deprivation, compet<strong>in</strong>g environmental Health Risk exists <strong>in</strong> the society. Withoutdilut<strong>in</strong>g the gravity <strong>of</strong> the situation, it must be emphasized that we need to be objective <strong>and</strong>realistic <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g political <strong>and</strong> economic decisions <strong>in</strong> relation to the current problem <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arsenic</strong>or Fluoride Contam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> Ground Water <strong>and</strong> people should have the opportunity <strong>of</strong> an <strong>in</strong>formed choice <strong>of</strong> options, through a transparent system <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation shar<strong>in</strong>g.NIH & CGWB 137
