<strong>Mitigation</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Remedy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Groundwater</strong> <strong>Arsenic</strong> <strong>Menace</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>India</strong> : A Vision DocumentChapter- 8Roadmap for Achiev<strong>in</strong>g Envisaged Targets8.1 Important MilestonesMilestones are the events, which are envisaged as future course <strong>of</strong> actions to achievethe targeted goals. The targeted goals <strong>in</strong> this case are: (a) to make arsenic contam<strong>in</strong>ated aquifersconducive to preserve groundwater quality <strong>and</strong> produce arsenic free groundwater to meetdr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> irrigation dem<strong>and</strong>s, (b) to f<strong>in</strong>d susta<strong>in</strong>able techniques <strong>and</strong> technologies fordecontam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> aquifers from arsenic <strong>and</strong> for the removal <strong>of</strong> arsenic from contam<strong>in</strong>atedwater, (c) to scale up scope for unveil<strong>in</strong>g alternate sources <strong>of</strong> water to meet the dem<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>potable water <strong>in</strong> the arsenic affected <strong>and</strong> vulnerable areas, (d) to eradicate health hazards,orig<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>in</strong>gestion <strong>of</strong> arsenic contam<strong>in</strong>ated water, <strong>and</strong> (e) to make society responsive tounconscious usages <strong>of</strong> water. The milestones to achieve the above goals, as emerged from thechapter- 7: 'Work Ahead: Critical Concerns <strong>and</strong> Key Challenges,' can broadly be categorized as:(i) R & D work to be undertaken to reach at logical solutions to the arsenic calamity,(ii) immediate measures to provide arsenic free potable water to the people <strong>in</strong> the arsenicvulnerable areas, <strong>and</strong> (iii) activities to be undertaken for Capacity Build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> SocialEmpowerment, <strong>and</strong> (iv) revisit to revise the National St<strong>and</strong>ard for <strong>Arsenic</strong> <strong>in</strong> dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water. Thedetails <strong>of</strong> these envisaged tasks are as follows:(i)(ii)(iii)Emerg<strong>in</strong>g R & D Activities - to prepare database, improvise <strong>and</strong> translateunderst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> causes, geochemistry, genesis, aggravation, mobilization <strong>and</strong>dissolution processes <strong>of</strong> arsenic <strong>in</strong> groundwater for different hydro-geological sett<strong>in</strong>gsto derive methods for <strong>in</strong>-situ remedy for decontam<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g aquifers from arsenic; todevise cost effective, eco-friendly <strong>and</strong> socially accepted arsenic removal devices; to<strong>in</strong>vestigate feasibility <strong>of</strong> alternate susta<strong>in</strong>able water management (SW & GW)strategies to meet dem<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> water <strong>in</strong> the arsenic affected <strong>and</strong> vulnerable areas, toassess impact <strong>of</strong> arsenic <strong>in</strong> food cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> related health hazards, toascerta<strong>in</strong> health impact <strong>of</strong> arsenic contam<strong>in</strong>ated groundwater, etc.Ensur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Arsenic</strong> Free Water- activities <strong>and</strong> plan <strong>of</strong> actions to provide arsenic freedr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water to the people <strong>in</strong> affected <strong>and</strong> vulnerable areas,Capacity Build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Social Empowerment - activities to promote publicawareness, capacity build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> social empowerment about importance <strong>of</strong> water <strong>and</strong>its effective usages, health related issues, ill-effects <strong>of</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g contam<strong>in</strong>ated water, etc.NIH & CGWB 139
