Appendix 1 – Interculturalcommunication and interculturalawareness courseIntercultural communication and interculturalawarenessCourse overview and outlineCourse aimsThis course aims to provide an introduction to intercultural communicationthrough English and the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to successfully dothis.■■■■By the end of the course you have an understanding of the relationshipbetween language and culture in intercultural communication.The role of English as the global lingua franca of intercultural communication.■■ An understanding of the knowledge, skills and attitudes associated withintercultural awareness and its role in intercultural communication throughEnglish.Please remember that this course is not a test of your English, so do not worryabout making mistakes. The most important thing is to communicate and take partin the course.Course structure and timetableLearning in this course will take place online through Language House which is thename given to the University of Southampton’s virtual learning environment.You have 10 weekly topics to cover which contain interactive activities for you tocomplete with feedback. The weekly topics should take between 30 minutes to 1hour to complete. *You also have a discussion forum where you can share your ideas about thetopics you have completed with other students on this course and with yourtutor. There will also be special guest appearances from students at the Universityof Southampton. The discussion forum should take about 30 - 45 minutes tocomplete. You are expected to contribute to five of the discussion forums. Thismeans you do not have to post every week; although, you can if you would like to.There will be a number of live chat sessions as well where you can also discussideas with your tutor and other students.
