PART E - INFORMATION ON RISKS ANDRELATED HEDGING POLICIESSection 1Credit riskQUALITATIVE INFORMATIONB<strong>as</strong>el II projectIn compliance with the B<strong>as</strong>el II New Capital Accord transposed into the Italianregul<strong>at</strong>ory framework under Bank of Italy circular no. 263 issued on 27December 2006 (“New regul<strong>at</strong>ions on capital requirements for banks”),<strong>Mediobanca</strong> h<strong>as</strong> set itself the objective of me<strong>as</strong>uring credit risk using internalr<strong>at</strong>ings.A specific project h<strong>as</strong> therefore been launched with a view to obtainingr<strong>at</strong>ific<strong>at</strong>ion by the Bank of Italy of the internal r<strong>at</strong>ing models to be used incalcul<strong>at</strong>ing the capital requirements for credit risk. The internal r<strong>at</strong>ing modelsregard the following customer segments: Banks, Insurances, Large corpor<strong>at</strong>e,Holding companies, Specialized lending <strong>and</strong> Mid corpor<strong>at</strong>e. In addition, a plan isbeing implemented to comply with the experience requirement for the models tobe r<strong>at</strong>ified, which will involve the existing procedures for approving, monitoring<strong>and</strong> renewing loans (described below) being gradually revised to incorpor<strong>at</strong>e therisk parameters calcul<strong>at</strong>ed via the internal models th<strong>at</strong> have been developed.Given the above, considering the uncertainty over possible changes to theregul<strong>at</strong>ory framework for the banking industry <strong>at</strong> the intern<strong>at</strong>ional level, thetimeframe for submitting the applic<strong>at</strong>ion for the IRB system to be valid<strong>at</strong>ed to theBank of Italy is currently being reviewed; <strong>and</strong> until the system h<strong>as</strong> been valid<strong>at</strong>ed,the <strong>Mediobanca</strong> Group will continue to use the st<strong>and</strong>ardized methodology it h<strong>as</strong>adopted since 1 January 2008– 359
