Section 4Significant accounting policiesFinancial <strong>as</strong>sets held for tradingThis c<strong>at</strong>egory comprises debt securities, equities, <strong>and</strong> the positive value ofderiv<strong>at</strong>ives held for trading including those embedded in complex instrumentssuch <strong>as</strong> structured bonds (recorded separ<strong>at</strong>ely).At the settlement d<strong>at</strong>e for securities <strong>and</strong> subscription d<strong>at</strong>e for deriv<strong>at</strong>ives,such <strong>as</strong>sets are recognized <strong>at</strong> fair value not including any transaction expenses orincome directly <strong>at</strong>tributable to the <strong>as</strong>set concerned, which are taken through theprofit <strong>and</strong> loss account.After initial recognition they continue to be me<strong>as</strong>ured <strong>at</strong> fair value, which forlisted instruments is calcul<strong>at</strong>ed on the b<strong>as</strong>is of market prices ruling <strong>at</strong> thereporting d<strong>at</strong>e (Level 1 <strong>as</strong>sets). If no market prices are available, other valu<strong>at</strong>ionmodels are used (Level 2 <strong>as</strong>sets) b<strong>as</strong>ed on market-derived d<strong>at</strong>a, e.g. valu<strong>at</strong>ions oflisted instruments with similar fe<strong>at</strong>ures, discounted c<strong>as</strong>h flow analysis, optionprice calcul<strong>at</strong>ion methods, or valu<strong>at</strong>ions used in comparable transactions, oraltern<strong>at</strong>ively valu<strong>at</strong>ions b<strong>as</strong>ed on internal estim<strong>at</strong>es (Level 3 <strong>as</strong>sets). Equities <strong>and</strong>linked deriv<strong>at</strong>ives for which it is not possible to reliably determine fair valueusing the methods described above are st<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>at</strong> cost (these too qualify <strong>as</strong> Level 3<strong>as</strong>sets). If the <strong>as</strong>sets suffer impairment, they are written down to their currentvalue.Gains <strong>and</strong> losses upon disposal <strong>and</strong>/or redemption <strong>and</strong> the positive <strong>and</strong>neg<strong>at</strong>ive effects of changes in fair value over time are reflected in the profit <strong>and</strong>loss account under the heading Net trading income.AFS securitiesThis c<strong>at</strong>egory includes all financial <strong>as</strong>sets apart from deriv<strong>at</strong>ives not bookedunder the headings Financial <strong>as</strong>sets held for trading, Financial <strong>as</strong>sets held tom<strong>at</strong>urity or Loans <strong>and</strong> receivables.AFS <strong>as</strong>sets comprise equities held for non-trading purposes which do notqualify <strong>as</strong> controlling interests, investments in <strong>as</strong>soci<strong>at</strong>es or jointly-controlledoper<strong>at</strong>ions.76 –
