For about a decade toward the end of the 19th century, Edward Earle was an<br />

exceptionally well-known circus performer of international acclaim. As the<br />

title ‘equilibrist’ would imply, he was best known for his balancing acts, some<br />

of which are displayed in this poster.<br />

awarded. <strong>The</strong> top seven award winners are<br />

reproduced in this poster, which solicits<br />

entries for the second contest in 1901, while<br />

Based on the Thomas Mayne Reid novel <strong>The</strong> Quadroon,<br />

Boucicault’s play from 1859 chronicles the tale of<br />

a Louisiana plantation in foreclosure, with all of its<br />

property, including its many slaves, to be offered at<br />

auction. While considered separate from the other slaves,<br />

Zoe, an octoroon (of 1 119 118 122<br />

�8 black heritage), is also going to<br />

be sold if she does not agree to become the mistress of<br />

���������������������������������������������������<br />

sale of the plantation. She, in turn, has been romantically<br />

involved with the landowner’s nephew, George, who<br />

wishes to run away with her. In the British version of the<br />

play the mixed-race couple is reunited and all live happily<br />
