it was forced into bankruptcy, only to be purchased
by the actor-director Jean Richard, and thus turned
into the Cirque Pinder-Jean Richard. A zoo was then
added to the array of previous attractions, and it
remains active to this day. This image for Pinder’s
Intelligent Elephants is arguably one of the most
charming ever created for a circus act, showcasing
the animals not only as customers gulping down
champagne, but also as waiters, one producing a bill
for carrots, cabbage, and very expensive bubbly.
