While the company’s symbol may be a male
warrior, Pal was not one to give up a chance to
design a curvaceous beauty. However, with a
name like Liberator, his usual array of showgirls
and upper-class ladies simply would not do. And
so, we have a Valkyrie, ready to ride out in battle
on her newly-acquired bicycle. One of the more
interesting aspects of this poster is that, due to
popularity, it was redone dozens of times by
various artists who merely added some foliage
or altered the text slightly. This is the original
smaller format version of the poster.
For an artist who created dozens of lovely ladies
to help promote everything from beverages to
theatrical revues, this may be Pal’s most beautiful
salesgirl. The brand in question is Cusenier, a
French spirits producer dating back to 1868,
which was bought in the late 1970s by Pernod-
Ricard. This is the larger format.
The French Maid was a highly successful
vaudevillian musical comedy, ultimately
traveling to New York for an equally-long run.
Unlike Pal’s other poster for the company, which
focuses on the variety of spirits produced by
Cusenier, this image showcases their Crême de
Menthe, so minty its fresh bite is ‘glacial.’
Signed pastel drawing. Framed.
An exuberant piece by Péan in which a host of merry revelers
are cheering on something just beyond the frame. A couple
comments quietly to one another in the lower left as the

garb cups his hand to his face to cheer as he tosses some confetti.
It is anything but static, an image with photographic naturalism
rather uncommon for the era.
Est: $3,000-$4,000.
