Located in the south of France, Céret is famous for
its Museum of Modern Art, which houses paintings
by Chagall, Matisse, Herbin, and Soutine. The crux
of its modern collection, however, centers around an
impressive array of works by Picasso, including his
from 1911 to 1912, and Café Pablo in the town is
dedicated to him. Forty-plus years after he resided
there, the Musée held an exhibition of his ceramic
works and Picasso designed this poster to promote
it, a sunshiny burst of creative elation executed in
traditional red and yellow Catalan hues.
A sophisticated, straight forward design that visually
links the Salon with its sister publication La Plume. In
the background, a woman peruses the latest creations
by artists represented at the Salon, while the lady
facing us views the same images within the pages of
the magazine. On the bottom, it notes that La Plume

it was technically the other way around, wherein La
Plume used the Salon as a marketing outlet for the art
it published. The exhibitions lasted until 1900, while
the magazine stayed in circulation until 1913.
A charter member of the Salon d’Automne, Redon
employed a lighthearted touch that showed up in his
contributions to Parisian humor magazines as well as
his paintings and posters. However, there’s nothing
humorous about the sensual ultra-femininity that
he uses to promote a musical evening of poetry and
pulchritude at the Casino de Paris featuring Liane de
Anne Marie Chassaigne and raised in a nunnery,
Pougy became a noted demimondaine and rival
of La Belle Otero. Noted more for her looks than
her talent, Sarah Bernhardt, faced with the task of
teaching Liane to act, advised her that when she was
on stage, it would be best to keep her “pretty mouth
