Based on Gorguet’s original design for the Parisian premier in 1889, this poster
d’apres the artist displays three pivotal moments within the opera. Written by
Massenet, the story is based on the medieval tale Parthénopéus de Blois, in
which the Byzantine empress and sorceress Esclarmonde is suddenly given
control of the kingdom when her father abdicates, thus separating her from her
lover Roland. Using her powers, she sends him to a magical island where she
visits, she gives him a sword which guarantees his victory in any battle provided
he remains faithful to her. Ultimately, they are torn apart repeatedly, identities
are revealed and then hidden again, all leading toward a happy ending in which
the knight and his empress are reunited.
“Perhaps it is the handling of silhouettes that gives this poster of a woman print
fancier its appeal. The scene is a gallery interior. Gottlob has placed the woman
in front of a large window, and through dramatic backlighting has emphasized
the dark forms. The crisp outlines of the plumed hat, the woman’s delicate
features, and the print she examines dominate the composition, and the stylized
lettering announcing the exhibition enliven the surface... the examples of the
