A previously unrecorded variant of Mucha’s famous Stars series, featuring
the artist dealt symbolically with heavenly concepts, resulting in some
of his most haunting creations.
Founded by Alexandre Bisquit in 1819, Cognac Bisquit has a long history
of excellence, having been noted as a favorite of King George IV and
Winston Churchill. Here, Mucha offers us one of his most alluring
designs, the curvaceous blond, nestled in the privacy of the lush vines,
coyly glancing over her shoulder at us while she takes a sip of
the beverage.
It is a rare thing for Mucha to show the actual product in one of his advertising
posters, and yet here, in this previously undocumented variant, we see the

of the image, the girl is holding a book, possibly implying that the image was
recycled more than once to promote various products or events. There is also
usually a calendarium in the lower register which, here, has been replaced by
the brand’s information. This is one of two known copies of this poster.
Est: $12,000-$15,000.
