Nice’s pre-Lenten Carnaval has been celebrated since the
thirteenth century and the festival certainly has a reputation for
libidinous revelry. And while Serracchiani’s poster for the 1938
event takes a step back from the goatish nature of the fete with
a comedic mask that puts a face to the festival (see PAI-XLIX,

So begins the introduction to Sem’s eight-lithograph collection of celebrities
�����������������������������������������������������������������������������
composer Massenet and actor Albert Brasseur. The career of caricaturist Sem
started modestly enough in his hometown of Perigueux where he published his
�����������������������������������������������������������������������������������
for Bordeaux in 1897 and Marseilles in 1898 did he venture to Paris where
he charmed the city folk with his talent. Hardly anyone of note escaped being
captured for posterity.

fashionable ladies, entitled Real & Fake Chic. Beginning and ending the book
are Real visions of style–surprisingly, these images are all advertisements for
����������������������������������������������������������������������������
restaurants, Packard automobiles, etc. But sandwiched in-between are some
of the most slicing, brutal, and outrageous pochoir caricatures of women
oblivious to their less-than-chic attire. Reducing these misguided folks to
insect form is about the kindest thing Sem does for them. His “Museum of

to in an attempt to stay on the cutting edge of style, is something that has got to
be seen to be believed.

perfectly cloudy sky, a couple catches their last round in a day’s
worth of tennis matches. Further back, the solarium is buzzing
with refreshed spa-goers and night of merriment and relaxation in
the peaceful French town of Aubrac-Aveyron is on its way. One
of the most beautifully designed travel posters for a hotel.
