The Palace Theater opened at 15 rue Blanche in 1878 on the former
sight of a skating rink and specialized in the sort of fantasy ballet
����������������������������������������������������������������������
he masses the elements here, playing the whirling soldierettes,
disapproving male band, and irresistible dancing bears off of one
another. The creator of this improbable theatrical piece appears to
be none other than the same caricaturist Alfred Grévin who founded
the Musée Grévin circa 1880.

By the age of 17, Louise Balthy was receiving rave reviews at the Eldorado
in Paris. Although trained in ballet, her true talents came out when performing
comic songs. These cheerful, humorous ditties would take her to the stage

d’Eté. She has been immortalized not only by Chéret, but also by Lautrec
and Cappiello (see Lot 205) in a variety of her vivacious public appearances.

Created in 1863 by Angelo Mariani, Vin Mariani is simply a
combination of Bordeaux wine and coca leaves. The restored ‘health and
vitality’ mentioned in this poster, as well as the model’s visual exuberance,
is the result of the small amount of cocaine laced in the beverage – an
ingredient used by many popular drinks of that era, including Coca-Cola.
