<strong>Planning</strong> <strong>education</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>care</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>earth</strong>The primers, written at grade 8 readability levels, serve as resources <strong>for</strong>schools, communities and organizations that provide environmental<strong>education</strong> programmes. They provide in<strong>for</strong>mation that educa<strong>to</strong>rs may use <strong>to</strong>develop products and programmes <strong>for</strong> specific audiences, and are seen as ameans of engaging o<strong>the</strong>r federal government departments and provincialgovernments in a shared environmental <strong>education</strong> agenda.Develop secondary <strong>education</strong> productsThe primers contain bodies of in<strong>for</strong>mation that o<strong>the</strong>rs will use in developing“retail” <strong>education</strong> products. Environment Canada also has its own secondaryproducts, <strong>for</strong>merly issued on an ad hoc basis. They are now required <strong>to</strong>support <strong>the</strong> same <strong>the</strong>mes as <strong>the</strong> primers. There are three kinds of product:fact sheets (<strong>for</strong> use mainly in high schools and colleges); “idea snapshots”(3-4 pages documents, highly illustrated, on particular environmental ideassuch as composting or smog); and “messages” (“bullets” of in<strong>for</strong>mationaddressing important environmental citizenship ideas or actions,accompanied by supporting facts).98
