Planning education to care for the earthThe primers, written at grade 8 readability levels, serve as resources forschools, communities and organizations that provide environmentaleducation programmes. They provide information that educators may use todevelop products and programmes for specific audiences, and are seen as ameans of engaging other federal government departments and provincialgovernments in a shared environmental education agenda.Develop secondary education productsThe primers contain bodies of information that others will use in developing“retail” education products. Environment Canada also has its own secondaryproducts, formerly issued on an ad hoc basis. They are now required tosupport the same themes as the primers. There are three kinds of product:fact sheets (for use mainly in high schools and colleges); “idea snapshots”(3-4 pages documents, highly illustrated, on particular environmental ideassuch as composting or smog); and “messages” (“bullets” of informationaddressing important environmental citizenship ideas or actions,accompanied by supporting facts).98
