IUCN in environmental education in westernAfrica and the SahelMonique TrudelAbstractEnvironmental education in the Sahel and neighbouring countries ofwestern Africa must connect first with traditional knowledge andcommunity needs, and develop from this an understanding of how todeal with problems. School children as agents of change incommunities are a principal target for educational activities.Examples of success in changing attitudes and behaviour where thequality of the environment affects survival and health are given.Environmental information, however, is not always the motivation forchange of behaviour, and the perception of personal benefit isimportant. Contributions by Monique Trudel and Raphael Ndiayeoffer an overview of environmental education in this region, andpresent the longstanding IUCN programme. A paper by IbrahimThiaw provides an example of how strategies to reduce humanpressure on natural resources succeeded by appealing to the dominantinterests of local populations.IntroductionThe International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has been atwork in western Africa for more than 10 years. IUCN has provided help toMali in implementing a natural resources management policy since 1984. InNiger, IUCN works in the Air Tenere region and, in collaboration with thethen World Wildlife Fund (WWF), participated in the creation of the Air andthe Tenere Natural Reserve, now a Unesco World Heritage Area.Since 1988, IUCN has been working on a coastal planning project inGuinea-Bissau (70 percent of the population live on the coast), providingsupport to government efforts to conserve and make sustainable use ofnatural resources. IUCN is also involved in the creation of a national parkand biosphere reserve in the Bijagos Archipelago.IUCN aims are to develop useful methods, to promote these methods and tobuild local capacities for sustainable development through actions anddemonstration projects carried out in collaboration with such partners asnon-governmental organizations, government departments or bilateral andmultilateral cooperation agencies.The IUCN Sahel programme, implemented in 1988, addresses the74
