<strong>IUCN</strong> <strong>education</strong> in Sahel and West AfricaIn all countries, <strong>the</strong> environmental <strong>education</strong> programme revolves around<strong>the</strong> publishing of a magazine (with in most cases <strong>the</strong> name of a respectedanimal as title). On <strong>the</strong> basis of experience in Mali, where <strong>the</strong> first nationalteam was established, o<strong>the</strong>rs in neighbouring countries were trained.Regional workshops <strong>to</strong> share ideas and training methods are arranged twicea year.The numbers of people directly involved in <strong>the</strong> programme i.e. schoolchildren and teachers, are 7,000 in Mali, 7,000 in Niger, 3,000 in BurkinaFaso, 1,000 in Senegal and 10,000 in Guinea-Bissau. It is estimated that in<strong>the</strong> target areas alone, <strong>for</strong> each person directly concerned, eight will beindirectly affected.In addition <strong>to</strong> activities spreading outwards from schools, local singers,s<strong>to</strong>rytellers, mask wearers, puppet-masters and ac<strong>to</strong>rs, painting and dyeingactivities have been used <strong>to</strong> convey environmental messages in simpleA workshop <strong>for</strong> aschool in how <strong>to</strong>make marionnettesand maskscontributed <strong>to</strong>reviving skillsamongst <strong>the</strong> young.<strong>IUCN</strong> hascollaborated withmarionnette troupesin Mali in makingdramas about <strong>the</strong>environment.
