Australia: education for the Great Barrier Reefneed to be based on research, segmenting the audience according to interestsand motivation, setting measurable objectives and using effective media toreach those groups.The tourist industry has to be convinced of the need for long-term strategicapplied research as a basis for future developments, and commercialoperators need to see what benefits they are obtaining from the payment forpermits to work in protected natural areas.The challenge for the natural resource management agencies is to design theright marketing “mix” of communication, education and extension strategiesto influence and lead their client groups and audiences. In additon to theabove these include social research and evaluation, joint agency support foreducational campaigns, liaison meetings with public lobby groups, face toface informal contact, and producing educational materials.GBRMPA is now recognized internationally for its use of information andeducation as a tool in managing marine protected areas. The strategy hasmarshalled strong public support for the marine park concept, and highlevels of public participation and cooperation in developing zoning plans.The Authority’s education and information programme must continue toadapt its services to meet the needs of Marine Park users in the light oftourist developments, environmental impact assessments, “user pays”applications, and water quality issues.Lessons learnedNever give up making research results known to industry and thepublic, never give up building communication goals as an integral partof management planning, never give up with extensive publicoutreach and community participation programmes... persistence paysoff in the long run.ReferencesAlder, J. 1994.
