<strong>Planning</strong> <strong>education</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>care</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>earth</strong>Many community organizations receive support from GBRMPA indeveloping <strong>education</strong>al materials or projects about <strong>the</strong> Marine Park.Educational resourcesBooks, maps, posters, videos, research publications and brochures producedby GBRMPA are in great demand from <strong>education</strong>al institutions, <strong>to</strong>uris<strong>to</strong>pera<strong>to</strong>rs, private publishers and o<strong>the</strong>rs seeking in<strong>for</strong>mation on <strong>the</strong> Reef.Many of <strong>the</strong>se productions have received national awards <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir quality.Nearly all publications are on sale.Television advertising on regional networks has been a successful way ofraising awareness about conservation and management. A series of five 30-second TV commercials targeting recreational anglers with messages aboutzoning, and <strong>the</strong> effects of overfishing, pollution, and anchor damage was runin conjunction with seminars, direct mail advertising with boat owners, localnewspaper edi<strong>to</strong>rials and school activities <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> national “Seaweek” in1990. An evaluation rated this campaign as highly successful.“Deckhand”, a video programme <strong>to</strong> in<strong>for</strong>m and communicate with over 500licensed commercial fishermen on issues affecting <strong>the</strong>ir industry in <strong>the</strong>Marine Park, has been co-sponsored by government agencies, suppliers ofmarine equipment and industry and has received considerable support fromfishermen. The video communication concept is a cost-effective method <strong>to</strong>reach any target audience.The Reef is high on <strong>the</strong> list of environmental <strong>education</strong> <strong>to</strong>pics in Australianschools, and its popularity has led <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> production of special curriculumresource materials <strong>for</strong> geography, science and social studies classes.“Project Reef Ed” is a multi-disciplinary, activity-based reference book <strong>for</strong>senior teachers. Developed by GBRMPA, this book has been widelydistributed in secondary schools. Almost 2,000 copies have been sold.Designed by a team of educa<strong>to</strong>rs, <strong>the</strong> book proposes over 150 field orclassroom activities <strong>for</strong> students. Working with leading environmentaleduca<strong>to</strong>rs, GBRMPA staff conduct teacher training workshops, advise Stateand regional <strong>education</strong> departments about Reef studies and sponsor manyschool-based projects, including site moni<strong>to</strong>ring, and “adopt-a-beach”conservation projects. Prospective sponsors are encouraged <strong>to</strong> support danceand drama per<strong>for</strong>mances about <strong>the</strong> marine environment which appeal <strong>to</strong>young people.The Department of Environment and Heritage provides in<strong>for</strong>mation on <strong>the</strong>Reef through its network of regional offices and interpretative centres.Marine Park rangers maintain a high level of public contact. Interpretativecentres at Cardwell, Airlie Beach and Heron Island attract thousands ofpeople wanting <strong>to</strong> learn about <strong>the</strong> Reef and <strong>the</strong> need <strong>for</strong> conservation.Interpretative displays and <strong>education</strong>al programmes have been created <strong>for</strong>visi<strong>to</strong>rs at <strong>to</strong>urist resorts such as Lady Elliott Island, Heron Island andDaydream Island.138
