Similarly, if there is a concern in other areas ofthe institution, the student should first direct his/hercomplaint in writing to the Supervisor of the specificarea the concern is about, then to the appropriate Deanor Director. Students may appeal for a refund due toissues such as a serious illness, death of immediate familymember, or military duty assignment to the Dean ofEnrollment Services and Director of Financial Services/Controller.The final step to the appeal process is a written appealto the appropriate Vice President depending on whichperson has responsibility for the area with which the complaintis associated: Vice President for Learning Servicesfor academic matters, Vice President for Student Servicesfor student services matters, Vice President of InformationTechnology for technology matters, or Vice President ofBusiness and Administrative Services for financial or businessservices matters. The Vice President may choose tohandle the complaint or refer the matter to a grievancecommittee. The decision of the Vice President or grievancecommittee is final. Formal Grievance forms can beobtained from the Business Office, Learning Services,Student Services, and the Student Success Center.Student Rights and Responsibilities<strong>Arizona</strong> <strong>Western</strong> <strong>College</strong> considers all students enrolled inthe <strong>College</strong> as adult students responsible and accountablefor their own behavior. Enrollment in the <strong>College</strong> carrieswith it the requirement that all students conduct themselvesas responsible members of the campus communityand maintain the highest degree of integrity and honesty.It is the expectation of AWC that students will obey local,state, and federal laws and conduct themselves in accordancewith the <strong>College</strong>’s standards of conduct as definedin the <strong>Arizona</strong> <strong>Western</strong> <strong>College</strong> Student Code of Conduct.This document is intended to provide a framework for anorderly and stable <strong>College</strong> community and to protect thedue process rights of students and other members of thecampus community.The Code covers student conduct which occurs on<strong>College</strong> property, at a <strong>College</strong> sponsored, sanctioned, orsupervised activity or function regardless of location, and,in any manner, on or off campus, is associated with the<strong>College</strong> or otherwise deemed to affect the operation ofthe <strong>College</strong>. The Student Code of Conduct is printed inthe AWC Student Handbook and available on the <strong>College</strong>website at www.azwestern.edu Click on the Campus Lifetab and select Student Code of Conduct from the list ofdownloadable files.Printed copies are available in the Vice President forStudent Services Office. Examples of prohibited conductinclude, but are not limited to:• academic dishonesty• disruptive conduct• possession, sale, purchase, use, or transfer of illegaldrugs, drug paraphernalia, or alcohol• under the influence of alcohol or drugs• threats, assaults, and fighting• defamation• obscenity and vulgarity• initiation and hazing• fraud, misrepresentation, extortion, and theft• endangering the health and safety of others• obstruction of <strong>College</strong> facilities• false imprisonment• harassment and sexual harassment• vandalism, littering, and destruction of property• plagiarism, forgery, and cheatingCopyright Act ComplianceStudents are expected to comply with the provision ofthe Copyright Act of 1976 pertaining to photocopying ofprinted materials, copying of computer software, and videotaping.To assist students in complying with the copyrightlaw, appropriate notices shall be placed on or near allequipment capable of duplicating copyrighted materials.Taping of Classroom Lectures• Faculty members shall inform their students, withinthe first week of class, their rules regarding taping.Failure to do so will accord students the right to tapethe lectures.• Students with disabilities that render them unable totake adequate lecture notes are entitled to reasonableaccommodation to remedy this inability. Requests foraccommodation are processed through the Services forStudents with Disabilities Office.42
