Types of Programs<strong>Arizona</strong> <strong>Western</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers the followingfive types of programs:• Transfer Degrees:• Associate in Arts (A.A.)• Associate in Business (A.Bus.)• Associate in Science (A.S.)• Occupational Degrees:• Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.)• General Studies Degree:• Associate in General Studies (A.G.S.)• Occupational Certificates• AGEC (<strong>Arizona</strong> General Education Curriculum)CertificatesTransfer DegreesThose students wishing to begin their studies at AWCwith the intention of transferring to a state university areencouraged to complete one of the transfer degree programs.There are three advantages to completing a transferdegree before moving on to a university:• the lower division general education requirements willbe fulfilled,• students can get an early start on their major bycompleting some or many of the lower division majorcourses during their first two years, and• by graduating with an associate’s degree, studentswill have completed 64 credits towards the usual 120credits required for a bachelor’s degree, thus placingthem in junior status and just over halfway through therequired number of credits.Because of these obvious advantages, those transfer studentswho begin at AWC are strongly encouraged to stayhere two years and complete a transfer degree program.The Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree is designed forstudents majoring in the arts, humanities, or the socialand behavioral sciences and who plan to transfer toa college or university to earn a bachelor’s degree. TheA.A. in General Studies is also offered for those studentsas yet undecided about their university major.The Associate in Business (A.Bus.) degree is designedfor students majoring in business and who plan to transferto a college or university to earn a bachelor’s degree.The Associate in Science (A.S.) degree is designedfor students majoring in the physical or biologicalsciences or in the health-related professions and whoplan to transfer to a college or university to earn a bachelor’sdegree. The A.S. in General Studies is also offeredfor those students as yet undecided about their universitymajor, but who know they would like to pursue somecareer in science.A.A. in General Studies AcceleratedProgram: EXITOEXITO: Excellence through“Xcelerated” Involvement, Teaching,and Organization.Are you interested in completing an associate’s degreein general studies to prepare you to transfer to a university?Would you like to do it quickly? The EXITO programis offering college-level ready students the opportunityto complete an A.A. transfer degree in 18 months,with fewer hours spent in the classroom. The instructionwill be a combination of on-line courses and traditionalcourses with class times scheduled during hours whichwill accommodate those students who are working duringthe day. The programs are also used to upgrade skills andretrain currently employed adults. Students who enrollin such programs generally do not plan to transfer to afour-year college or university unless it offers comparablefour-year programs.
