PARKINSON’S DISEASE
An overview
INTRODUCTION
Parkinson‟s disease (PD) was first formally described in modern times in a
famous monograph entitled “An essay on the shaking palsy” published in 1817 by an
English physician called James Parkinson (Parkinson 1817; Figure 1). In this report, the
disease was initially defined as shaking palsy (paralysis agitans) and the syndromes
observed were described as “involuntary tremulous motion, with lessened muscular
power, in parts not in action and even when supported; with a propensity to bend the
trunk forward, and to pass from a walking to a running pace: the senses and intellects
being uninjured”.
