<strong>SECNAVINST</strong> <strong>1412.9B</strong>7 Feb 2006Continuation Procedures1. Purpose. This enclosure pertains to the continuation onactive duty of eligible permanent LDOs and Regular warrantofficers who are subject to involuntary retirement under section6383 or 1305 of reference (a). .2. Generala. Continuation selection boards shall be convened,whenever the needs of the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Corps</strong> require, by SECNAV toconsider officers for deferment of involuntary separation orretirement. The requirement for continuation will be a part ofthe annual promotion plan. As a matter of efficiency, promotionselection boards may reconvene as continuation selection boards.b. The results of continuation selection boards shall bemade known sufficiently in advance of the date of involuntaryretirement so as to allow officers who are selected fordeferment, and those who are not selected for deferment, areasonable period of time for personal planning. However, theresults shall not be released prior to release of the promotionselection board which reconvened to consider the officers forcontinuation.c. Each officer who is (1) continued on active duty, (2)not subsequently promoted or continued for a further period, and(3) not on a promotion list or continuation list shall, unlesssooner retired, be retired upon the expiration of the period forwhich the officer’s service was continued. Each officer shallbe retired on the first day of the first month following themonth in which the officer completes his or her period ofcontinued service.d. Any deferral of retirement and continuation on activeduty under this instruction shall be for a period not to exceed5 years, and such period may not extend beyond the date of theofficer’s 62nd birthday.3. Continuation of LDOsa. Under section 6383(a) of reference (a) and theprovisions of reference (i), a permanent LDO who holds the gradeof lieutenant colonel or major in the Regular <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Corps</strong> issubject to involuntary retirement on the last day of the monthEnclosure (5)
