<strong>SECNAVINST</strong> <strong>1412.9B</strong>7 Feb 2006in which he/she completes a total of 30 years of active navalservice (other than active duty for training in a Reservecomponent). In addition, under section 6383(b) of reference (a)and the provisions of reference (i), a permanent LDO who holdsthe grade of major in the Regular <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Corps</strong> and is not on apromotion list to the next higher grade is subject toinvoluntary retirement not later than the first day of theseventh month beginning after the month in which the Presidentapproves the report of a promotion selection board in which theofficer is considered as having failed of selection forpromotion to the grade of lieutenant colonel for the secondtime.b. A permanent LDO who is serving in the grade oflieutenant colonel or major and subject to involuntaryretirement may, subject to the needs of the service, becontinued on active duty under section 6383(i) of reference (a),if the officer is selected by a continuation selection board.c. A permanent LDO whose retirement is deferred undersection 6383(i) of reference (a) and who is not subsequentlypromoted may not be continued on active duty beyond 24 years ofactive commissioned service if in the grade of major, or 28years of active commissioned service if in the grade oflieutenant colonel, or beyond age 62, whichever is earlier.Consistent with these limitations, each continuation boardconvened under this enclosure will be provided guidanceconcerning the period of continuation that the board mayrecommend for each officer. No officer may be deferred for aperiod of more than 5 years by any one selection board.d. A permanent LDO who is selected for deferment ofinvoluntary retirement shall be notified of his/her selectionand afforded the opportunity to accept or decline it. If thepermanent LDO declines to continue on active duty, he/she shallbe retired in accordance with section 6383(a)-(c) of reference(a). The results of continuation selection boards shall be madeknown sufficiently in advance of the date of involuntaryretirement so as to allow those permanent LDOS who are selectedfor deferment, and those who are not selected for deferment, areasonable period of time for personal planning.e. Each officer who is (1) continued on active duty, (2)not subsequently promoted or continued for a further period, and(3) not on a promotion list or continuation list shall, unlesssooner retired, be retired upon the expiration of the period forwhich the officer’s service was continued.
