IntroductionThe Network Executive Software NETwork EXecutive (NETEX ® ) family of software products is used withnetwork hardware to enable two or more application programs (which may be on different host computers) tocommunicate with each other at multi-megabit speeds. The NETEX family of software consists of differentversions of NETEX for use with different operating systems, such as this version for use with the Unisys2200 Series. Network Executive Software also has utility programs available for use with NETEX, such asthe Bulk File Transfer (BFX'") utility, to simplify user programming to an even greater degree.The NETEX software resides as a stand-alone real-time program within each host involved in the communication.As an independent program, NETEX allows communications to take place at any time during hostoperations, independently of other functions in the system. The following subsections describe the characteristicsof NETEX and how NETEX uses the International Standards Organization guidelines for open systemsinterconnection.External InterfaceThe NETEX external interface for the application programmer is common for all versions of NETEX.NETEX provides eight requests for use in the programs that call NETEX. These calling programs may bewritten in assembly-level or high-level (such as FORTRAN) languages. NETEX programs written in highlevellanguages may be transported from one host to another (with some changes to account for different wordsizes and other machine architecture variations).NETEX also provides an operator interface that allows the monitoring and controlling of certain NETEXfunctions.Internal InteractionThe internal operation of all supported versions of NETEX are consistent and allow the different versions tointeract freely. Thus any program using NETEX may communicate with any other program on the networkthat is also using NETEX.To facilitate communication between hosts of different manufacture, NETEX supports code conversion.NETEX can call upon DX/Es, HYPERchannel, or NESiGate adapters to do code conversions and data assembly/disassembly(if the adapter has the code conversion option installed).NETEX ConnectionsTo communicate using NETEX, two calling programs first form a connection using a handshake protocol.NETEX then allows this pair of programs to communicate.NETEX allows multiple connections to be established at one time, and also allows one program to have multipleconnections simultaneously.NETEX also supports communications within a single host.
