MONEY MATTERSEducation Maintenance AllowanceYoung people may be able <strong>to</strong> claim up <strong>to</strong> £30 per week plus bonusesYou need <strong>to</strong> be 16, 17 or 18 and have left – or be about <strong>to</strong> leave – compulsory <strong>education</strong>.Your courseYou need <strong>to</strong> be enrolled on a course in England which is ei<strong>the</strong>r:• a full – time fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>education</strong> course at a college or a school• a LSC funded Diploma ( where available ) or a course that leads <strong>to</strong> an Apprenticeship.• An LSC funded Entry <strong>to</strong> Employment (e2e) course.Your household incomeTo qualify for EMA your annual household income must be below £30,810. These are <strong>the</strong> figures forstudents applying for courses in September 2008. In addition if you have a part – time job <strong>the</strong> moneyyou earn is not included in <strong>the</strong> household income.Regular bonuses can also be earned – but only if you continue <strong>to</strong> do well and meet targets set by yourteacher/provider. Your child may be entitled <strong>to</strong> a free school mealonly if you are in receipt <strong>of</strong> any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following:• Income Support (IS);• Income Based Jobseekers Allowance (IBJSA);• Support under part VI <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Immigration and Asylum Act 1999; or• Child Tax Credit, provided <strong>the</strong> parents are not entitled <strong>to</strong> Working Tax Credit and have an annualincome, (as assessed by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Cus<strong>to</strong>ms) that as <strong>of</strong> 6 April 2008 does notexceed £15575 (subject <strong>to</strong> annual review).• The Guarantee element <strong>of</strong> State Pension Credit.Children who receive IS or IBJSA in <strong>the</strong>ir own right are also entitled <strong>to</strong> receive free school meals.Once your benefit s<strong>to</strong>ps, <strong>the</strong> meal must be paid for. Pupils are encouraged <strong>to</strong> wear clothing that is acceptable <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> school. The Local Authority isnot able <strong>to</strong> provide financial assistance <strong>to</strong>wards <strong>the</strong> purchase <strong>of</strong> clothing for school.113
