Additional Help and InformationEducational Psychology ServiceEPs are highly qualified specialists who are trained <strong>to</strong> work with children from birth <strong>to</strong> 19 whoexperience problems with learning, getting along with o<strong>the</strong>rs or who have o<strong>the</strong>r physical ormedical difficulties. They can advise teachers, o<strong>the</strong>r staff and parents/carers on ways <strong>to</strong> helpchildren and young people make progress.Educational Psychologists are usually asked <strong>to</strong> become involved when children's learning,behaviour or wellbeing is a worry for staff in <strong>the</strong>ir school or early years setting. They can alsowork directly with little ones before <strong>the</strong>y begin at nursery at <strong>the</strong> request <strong>of</strong> a health pr<strong>of</strong>essionalor o<strong>the</strong>r people working in <strong>the</strong> early years. We need your permission first before we begin anywork. The service can be contacted on 0191 2774577.http://www.newcastle.gov.uk/core.nsf/a/edpsychologists?opendocumentEthnic Minority, Traveller and Refugee Pupil Achievement Service(EMTRAS)The role <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Service (EMTRAS) is <strong>to</strong> work with schools, teachers and o<strong>the</strong>r agencies <strong>to</strong>secure <strong>the</strong> highest possible standards <strong>of</strong> achievement for pupils whose home language maynot be English and who need special support <strong>to</strong> settle and learn in our schools.The Service will work with all <strong>the</strong> schools in Newcastle who have on <strong>the</strong>ir roll pupils who needsuch support. The EAL Standards Team (English as an Additional Language) is available <strong>to</strong>advise schools on appropriate provision and <strong>to</strong> work with teachers who have directresponsibility for EAL pupils.The Service also employs a small team <strong>of</strong> experienced EAL teachers and bi-lingual classroomassistants who can work directly with pupils in schools. They can cover all ages <strong>of</strong> pupilsacross all phases from Nursery <strong>to</strong> Post-16.
