Starting School – First and Primary SchoolWhen should my child start school?Admission <strong>to</strong> First and Primary SchoolsIn Newcastle, if your child will be 4 years old on or before 31 August 2009 <strong>the</strong>y can start at aCommunity or Voluntary Aided (Church) school from <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> school yearSeptember 2009.What happens when my child reaches primary school age?You must apply for your child <strong>to</strong> attend reception class at a Primary or First School.There are three ways <strong>to</strong> apply:1. On-line at www.newcastle.gov.uk/<strong>education</strong>/admissions2. By email, using <strong>the</strong> application form on <strong>the</strong> Information for Parents 2009 CD-Rom andavailable on <strong>the</strong> web site and sending it as an attachment <strong>to</strong>admissions.<strong>education</strong>@newcastle.gov.uk3. Using <strong>the</strong> form enclosed with <strong>the</strong> Information for Parents 2009 pack, returning it in <strong>the</strong> replypaidenvelope <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> School Admissions and Transfers Team.You will not au<strong>to</strong>matically be given a place at any school.Attendance at a Nursery unit does not guarantee a place in reception class at <strong>the</strong> sameschool and no priority is given <strong>to</strong> children who have attended a nursery class in <strong>the</strong>school. Many schools have more places available in <strong>the</strong>ir nursery class than <strong>the</strong>re are in <strong>the</strong>irreception class. This is because most <strong>of</strong> our schools <strong>of</strong>fer part time places in nursery.Attendance in reception class is full time.Co-ordinated admission arrangements – important information that you need <strong>to</strong> know if yourchild is due <strong>to</strong> start Primary or First school in September 2009For applications for reception places September 2009 we will operate a co-ordinated admissionscheme with <strong>the</strong> governing bodies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Voluntary Aided (Church) schools. If you wish <strong>to</strong>apply for a Primary, First or Voluntary Aided school in a different LA please apply direct <strong>to</strong> thatAuthority.You will receive one <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> a reception class place.If your child is eligible for a place in more than one school <strong>the</strong>n our arrangements mean thatyou will be allocated a place at <strong>the</strong> highest ranked school you nominated on your form whereyour child is eligible for a place. For example, if your child is eligible for a place at <strong>the</strong> schoolsyou nominated 1 st and 2 nd we will <strong>of</strong>fer a place at <strong>the</strong> school you put 1 st .37
