TRANSFER TO THE NEXT STAGE OF EDUCATIONWhat happens if I send my application in after this date?We will treat all forms returned after 24 October 2008 as late applications and they will beprocessed after all the forms received on time. This may affect the offer of a place at yourpreferred school.If your application is late for an exceptional reason, for example, you have just moved into thearea, it will be accepted up until 30 January 2009, but please let us know the reason.Otherwise late applications will be considered for any remaining places after the allocationperiod has ended on 30 January 2009.What if I change my mind after I have handed in the preference form?Please consider your preferences carefully as it will not be possible to make changes after theclosing date of 24 October 2008, unless there is a genuine reason for doing so.You can get advice about changing your preferences. Telephone the School Admissions andTransfers Team on 0191 277 7428 or email admissions.education@newcastle.gov.ukApplications to change your preferred school(s) should be confirmed in writing.If you have applied on-line, you may change your preference at any time until the closing date,24 October 2008. If you change or amend your preference on-line it is essential that youresubmit your application.If you have submitted your application by email, then emailadmissions.education@newcastle.gov.uk again with your new preference, with the subject ofyour email ‘changed preference’.When will I find out the result of my application?You will be notified in writing of the result of your application on Monday 2 nd March 2009.If you are a Newcastle resident we will let you know about your offer even if it is for a schooloutside of Newcastle.If you are resident in another Local Authority area then your home Authority will notify you ofyour offer, even if it is for a place in a Newcastle school.What can I do if I do not get a place in my preferred school?We will always try to offer you a place at your preferred school. If we are unable to do so, wewill allocate you a place at the next highest ranked school you nominated where your child iseligible for a place.If we are unable to offer you a place at any of your preferred schools then we will offer you aplace at the nearest (measured straight line distance) Community school to your homeaddress, with a vacancy and also send you a list of alternative schools with available places.You have the right of appeal to an independent panel whose decision is binding. You can finddetails of the appeals procedure on page 27 of this handbook.54
TRANSFER TO THE NEXT STAGE OF EDUCATIONIf your child has a statement of Special Educational Needs, any appeal has to be to the SpecialNeeds Tribunal. Contact the Special Educational Needs Development and AdministrationTeam on 0191 2774650 for further information.Will my child’s name be kept on a waiting list for my preferred school if a place is notoffered?Yes. If you are refused a place at a school because there were more applicants than availableplaces, your child’s name will be kept on a waiting list. If a place becomes available, it will beoffered to the applicant on the waiting list who ranks highest in accordance with the publishedadmissions criteria.Important informationApplications for admission after the date of allocation and after the acceptance period will alsobe placed on the waiting list in the position of their ranking according to the published criteria.No priority is given on the waiting list in relation to the date the application form is received.This means that a child whose name is on the waiting list can be moved down if another lateapplication is received that has higher priority by reference to the admission criteria.We will keep waiting lists for Community schools until the official start of the Autumn Term inSeptember 2009. From this date the Local Authority will pass waiting lists to individual schools.Please check the arrangements of other Authorities if you are going to apply for a place outsideNewcastle.Will I need to let you know that I am accepting the place?You have until Friday 13 March 2009 to accept the place. If you do not respond by this datethen the offer may be withdrawn.If I am offered a place in a school, can that offer be withdrawn?The offer of a place can be withdrawn if information supplied by you on your application isintentionally misleading or fraudulent. If the school is over-subscribed you may be required toprovide proof of your child’s home address. An offer may also be withdrawn if you do notaccept the place within the stated time.What should I do if I make alternative arrangements for my child?You should let us know if you arrange a place for your child in an independent or private schoolor City Technology College.If we have also offered you a place, please let us know so that we can offer your school placeto another child.55
