Starting School – First and Primary SchoolAppeals are <strong>to</strong> an independent panel and <strong>the</strong>ir decision is binding. You can find details <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>appeals procedure in Section 2 <strong>of</strong> this handbook.Important Information: When considering an appeal you should be aware <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> class sizerestrictions that apply <strong>to</strong> Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes as this means that <strong>the</strong> groundsfor appeal are very restricted. You can find information on class size legislation on page 43 inthis handbook.If your child has a Statement <strong>of</strong> Special Educational Needs, any appeal has <strong>to</strong> be <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> SpecialNeeds Tribunal. Fur<strong>the</strong>r information on <strong>education</strong> for children with special needs is included inSection 2 and Section 6 <strong>of</strong> this handbook.Will my child’s name be kept on a waiting list for my preferred school if a place is no<strong>to</strong>ffered?If we are unable <strong>to</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer you a place at your preferred Newcastle school, your child’s name willbe kept on a waiting list. Children will be listed, in order, in accordance with <strong>the</strong> school’sadmissions criteria and places will be <strong>of</strong>fered <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> highest-ranking applicant on <strong>the</strong> list, if <strong>the</strong>ybecome available.Please note that no priority is given on waiting lists <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> date <strong>the</strong> application form is received.This means that a child on <strong>the</strong> waiting list can be moved down <strong>the</strong> list if a late application isreceived for a child who has higher priority.Who should I contact for help and guidance on my application?If you need any help or advice about <strong>the</strong> admissions process please contact <strong>the</strong> SchoolAdmissions & Transfers Team at <strong>the</strong> Civic Centre on 0191 2777428 or you can call personallyat <strong>the</strong> Cus<strong>to</strong>mer Service Centre on <strong>the</strong> ground floor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Civic Centre.
