Starting SchoolEarly Years• Your child can start <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>education</strong> in pre-school playgroups from 2 years old and in daynurseries and childcare settings from birth, throughout Newcastle.• Your child can start <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>education</strong> in a Nursery School or a nursery unit in a primary or firstschool, when <strong>the</strong>y are three years old.• You are required by law <strong>to</strong> send your child <strong>to</strong> school no later than <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>school term after <strong>the</strong>ir fifth birthday. However, it is recommended that your child starts at<strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> school year during which <strong>the</strong>y will be five, in September, so that <strong>the</strong>yare not disadvantaged by a later start than o<strong>the</strong>r children in <strong>the</strong>ir Year Group.Applying for a place before your child is 3 years oldRegistration forms can be obtained from <strong>the</strong> childcare organisation or community nursery and aparent or carer wishing <strong>to</strong> book a place should complete and return <strong>the</strong> form. It is advisable <strong>to</strong>contact <strong>the</strong> nursery as soon as possible so your child’s name can be added <strong>to</strong> a waiting list andyou can obtain <strong>the</strong>ir admission policy which explains how <strong>the</strong>y allocate places.Community nurseries (Local Authority nurseries) <strong>of</strong>fer some places funded by ‘Children inNeed’ and some fee paying places. Funded places are usually available between <strong>the</strong> hours <strong>of</strong>9am and 3pm.Nursery Units in first and primary schools do not usually <strong>of</strong>fer places <strong>to</strong> children younger than 3years old.Applying for a place for your 3 or 4 year oldIn <strong>the</strong> term after your child is three years old you can get a free part-time early <strong>education</strong> place.This is for five two-and-a-half hour sessions each week during term time at a playgroup or daynursery.
