Starting School – First and Primary SchoolWhich schools can I include on my application form?You can include any Community or Voluntary Aided First or Primary school in Newcastle.How many schools should I include on my preference form?You can include up <strong>to</strong> four preferences <strong>of</strong> school on your form. Indicating only one or twopreferences, or listing <strong>the</strong> same school more than once, does not increase your chance <strong>of</strong> aplace in those schools.In what order should I put my preferences?You should put your preferences in rank order. You should put <strong>the</strong> school you would mostprefer first on your list. If your child is eligible for a place at more than one school, we will <strong>of</strong>fera place at <strong>the</strong> school ranked highest on your application form.Important Information – how applications are processed for Newcastle Community andVoluntary Aided schools.Who makes <strong>the</strong> decision on my application?The Local Authority (<strong>the</strong> Admissions Authority) will make <strong>the</strong> decision on applications for placesin community schools. If any <strong>of</strong> your preferences are for a Voluntary Aided (Church) school wewill send your application <strong>to</strong> that school. They will let us know if <strong>the</strong>y can <strong>of</strong>fer you a place.How do admission authorities make <strong>the</strong>ir decisions on who should be <strong>of</strong>fered a place ina school?If <strong>the</strong>re are fewer applicants than <strong>the</strong>re are available places in a school <strong>the</strong>n all applicants willbe <strong>of</strong>fered a place in <strong>the</strong> school.If <strong>the</strong>re are more applicants <strong>the</strong> admission authority (ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> Local Authority or <strong>the</strong> governingbody if it is a Voluntary Aided (Church) school) has admission criteria (<strong>of</strong>ten calledoversubscription criteria) that <strong>the</strong>y use <strong>to</strong> decide which children should be <strong>of</strong>fered a place.The admission criteria for Newcastle Community Schools are listed on page 42 <strong>of</strong> thishandbook. The table on page 44 shows how places were allocated for September 2008.Voluntary Aided schools and o<strong>the</strong>r Admission Authorities do not have <strong>the</strong> same admissioncriteria as Newcastle Community Schools. Fur<strong>the</strong>r information on <strong>the</strong> admissions criteria forVoluntary Aided schools in Newcastle are in Section 7 <strong>of</strong> this handbook.38
