336 DETECTION AND ESTIMATION OF INTERMEDIATESare trapped in a matrix <strong>of</strong> excess halohydrocarbon and their spectra can be obtained.By a slight modification, reactions <strong>of</strong> R with substances such as oxygencan be investigated.The examples given show the way in which studies <strong>of</strong> trapped radicals can complementother investigations <strong>of</strong> intermediate species. The techniques now at thedisposal <strong>of</strong> the chemist are such that any intermediate participating in a chemicalreaction should be susceptible to detection, identification and quantitative estimation,although in many cases a great deal <strong>of</strong> persistence and good luck will beneeded to achieve these objects.REFERENCES1 A.
