REFERENCES 407In this expression, k is the observed rate coefficient at an ionic strength p, k,is the limiting value of the rate coefficient at p = 0, Z, and Z, are the number ofelectronic charges carried by each ion, and C is a known constant for a givensolvent at a particular temperature. This equation can be linearized by takinglogarithms of each side, and the values of ko and z,z,C obtained in an exactlyanaiogous way to previous treatments.For reactions between neutral molecules or between a neutral molecule and anion at fairly high ionic strengths, the exponential dependence of the rate coefficienton the square root of the ionic strength may be replaced by an exponential dependenceon p alone.The origin of these expressions and the evidence for them is outside the scopeof this chapter.
