5.7.7 Where a wire rope is fixed to a jib or outrigger arm, the rope terminationshould be attached to the outrigger or jib with a shackle or other suitablemeans. Where a wire rope is attached to a working plat<strong>for</strong>m, the ropetermination should be attached to a structural load bearing portion <strong>of</strong> theworking plat<strong>for</strong>m with a shackle or other suitable means. U-bolt gripsshould not be used.5.7.8 Wire rope termination should be suitable <strong>for</strong> their purpose <strong>and</strong> shouldhave a strength <strong>of</strong> not less than 80% <strong>of</strong> the minimum breaking load <strong>of</strong> therope. Any free end <strong>of</strong> rope should be finished to prevent unlaying.5.7.9 The end <strong>of</strong> the suspension rope other than that on or through the liftingdevice or winch should be fixed to the suspension point on the ro<strong>of</strong> rig oron the working plat<strong>for</strong>m with a thimble eye splice or ferrule secured eyetermination or other rope coupling device giving a strength <strong>of</strong> not lessthan 80% <strong>of</strong> the breaking load <strong>of</strong> the rope.5.7.10 Wire ropes should be properly maintained <strong>and</strong> lubricated to preventcorrosion. Ropes with the following defects should not be used:(a)(b)(c)ropes with kinks, birdcage or any other distortion;when the total number <strong>of</strong> visible broken wires exceeds 5 % <strong>of</strong> thetotal number <strong>of</strong> wires in the rope in any length <strong>of</strong> ten diameters <strong>of</strong>the rope;there is on the rope marked signs <strong>of</strong> wear or corrosion (regulation23 <strong>of</strong> SWPR); <strong>and</strong>(d) reduction <strong>of</strong> nominal diameter <strong>of</strong> more than 10 %.5.8 Drum <strong>and</strong> Pulley5.8.1 When wire ropes pass over pulleys or round drums in winches <strong>and</strong>climbers, such pulleys or drums should have a pitch circle diameter <strong>of</strong>not less than 19 times the diameter <strong>of</strong> the rope.5.8.2 Where the rope terminates at the winding drum, the rope should befastened on to the drum in the manner specified by the manufacturer.31
