7.2 Wire Ropes7.2.1 All ropes should be regularly serviced in accordance with the instructions<strong>of</strong> the manufacturer <strong>of</strong> the winch or climbing device. Suspension ropes<strong>and</strong> safety ropes, together with their termination, should be <strong>of</strong> soundmaterial <strong>and</strong> free from patent defects. The ropes should be removedfrom service if there are signs <strong>of</strong> wear, distortion, kinks, broken str<strong>and</strong>sor corrosion.7.2.2 No attempt should be made to repair, splice or straighten ropes found tobe damaged. The ropes should be in one continuous length <strong>and</strong> freefrom joints.7.2.3 Detached ropes should be numbered separately. When detached theyshould be properly wound on to a drum or reel <strong>and</strong> stored under cover,clear <strong>of</strong> the ground <strong>and</strong> away from corrosive materials.7.2.4 The maintenance should include the lubrication <strong>of</strong> moving parts <strong>and</strong> thegeneral cleaning <strong>of</strong> the suspended working plat<strong>for</strong>m.7.3 Record <strong>of</strong> Maintenance7.3.1 A record <strong>of</strong> maintenance, i.e. maintenance log book, should be kept upto-dateto record down the parts or items <strong>of</strong> the suspended workingplat<strong>for</strong>m which have been inspected, repaired <strong>and</strong> replaced. The recordshould note down the dates on which the parts or items are repaired orreplaced.7.3.2 The record <strong>of</strong> maintenance should be kept in a safe place. If the suspendedworking plat<strong>for</strong>m is taken out <strong>of</strong> use, the records <strong>of</strong> maintenance shouldbe kept <strong>for</strong> a period <strong>of</strong> at least 6 years after the date on which it wastaken out <strong>of</strong> use (regulation 24 <strong>of</strong> the SWPR).47
