6.5 Marking <strong>of</strong> <strong>Safe</strong> <strong>Working</strong> Load <strong>and</strong> Number <strong>of</strong> Persons6.5.1 Every suspended working plat<strong>for</strong>m should be marked clearly <strong>and</strong> legiblyon its working plat<strong>for</strong>m :(a)(b)(c)the safe working load applicable to the suspended working plat<strong>for</strong>m;the maximum number <strong>of</strong> persons that may be carried at any onetime; <strong>and</strong>an appropriate mark to distinguish it from other similar suspendedworking plat<strong>for</strong>ms (regulation 22(a) <strong>of</strong> the SWPR).6.6 <strong>Safe</strong> <strong>Use</strong> <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Suspended</strong> <strong>Working</strong> Plat<strong>for</strong>m6.6.1 The suspended working plat<strong>for</strong>m should only be used by a person who istrained <strong>and</strong> instructed to operate it. The operatives should use the propermeans <strong>of</strong> access to <strong>and</strong> egress from the working plat<strong>for</strong>m.6.6.2 Where electric arc welding <strong>and</strong>/or cutting is to be carried out from theworking plat<strong>for</strong>m, special precautions should be taken to reduce thepossibility <strong>of</strong> the welding current arcing through the suspension wire ropeduring the course <strong>of</strong> welding from the working plat<strong>for</strong>m <strong>and</strong> to preventthe transfer <strong>of</strong> stray welding currents to the suspension or safety ropesas this could impair their strength or cause their fracture. Reference shouldbe made to ANSI A10.8-1988 American National St<strong>and</strong>ard <strong>for</strong> construction<strong>and</strong> demolition operations: scaffolding safety requirements.6.6.3 When portable electrical equipment is used by operatives on the workingplat<strong>for</strong>m, electrical supply <strong>for</strong> these equipment should not be drawn fromthe power source <strong>of</strong> the suspended working plat<strong>for</strong>m. Electricity shouldbe supplied from an independent power source from the building.6.6.4 When flammable substance is used by operatives on the working plat<strong>for</strong>m,the flammable substance should be contained in a proper container. Fireextinguisher <strong>of</strong> a suitable type should be provided on the working plat<strong>for</strong>m.Under no circumstances should any person be allowed to smoke on theworking plat<strong>for</strong>m, nor any naked flame process such as gas welding workbe conducted.43
