TIGER TASK FORCE REPORT JOINING THE DOTS ■against ‘depredators’. In many cases, <strong>the</strong>protectors (forest guards and <strong>of</strong>ficers) have put<strong>the</strong>ir lives at stake to save <strong>the</strong> tiger. In many cases,<strong>the</strong>ir efforts have paid <strong>of</strong>f. But as more, powerful,interests converge against <strong>the</strong> tiger, <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong>conservation is getting lost, bit by bit. It is,<strong>the</strong>refore, essential to seek out new directions in<strong>the</strong> future so that <strong>the</strong> tiger can be protected.In summary, it is <strong>the</strong> assessment <strong>of</strong> this <strong>Task</strong> <strong>Force</strong>that every tiger reserve in <strong>the</strong> country is not facing aSariska-type crisis. But <strong>the</strong> <strong>Task</strong> <strong>Force</strong> also believesthat <strong>the</strong> protection <strong>of</strong> tigers is happening in Indiaagainst all odds. What we need to understand is thata Sariska-type crisis haunts every protected area inIndia — where islands <strong>of</strong> conservation are underattack from poachers, miners and every o<strong>the</strong>rexploitative activity. They are also under siege from<strong>the</strong>ir own inhabitants, <strong>the</strong> people, who live in <strong>the</strong>sereserves and outside <strong>the</strong> islands <strong>of</strong> conservation, andwho have not benefited from <strong>the</strong>se protected areasbut continue to lose livelihood options and face dailyharassment. In <strong>the</strong>se circumstances, if <strong>the</strong> defencesare down, protection will fail. Like it did in Sariska.The challenge is to ensure that <strong>the</strong> siege can be liftedso that <strong>the</strong> tigers can survive.With this report, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Tiger</strong> <strong>Task</strong> <strong>Force</strong> hopes it canprovide some answers to this immense challenge.The assessment 13
