THE METAFORE PROTOCOLThe HCSS team went – with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> scope <strong>of</strong> this project – to somelengths to ensure <strong>in</strong>tercoder reliability 10 :• All teams were tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>tensively by <strong>the</strong> HCSS team at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project.• Analysts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese, Russian and English teams had prior cod<strong>in</strong>gexperience.• Extensive documentation on cod<strong>in</strong>g, both general and project-specific,was made available (and constantly updated based on lessons learned)on Google Wave.• At <strong>the</strong> start <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project, <strong>the</strong> different language doma<strong>in</strong>s teams each<strong>in</strong>itially bl<strong>in</strong>d coded <strong>the</strong> same three English studies, discussed <strong>the</strong>irresults and calibrated <strong>the</strong>ir cod<strong>in</strong>g efforts.• The teams were subsequently supervised by experienced HCSS staffwhile analyz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir specific language doma<strong>in</strong> studies. Whenever <strong>the</strong>yfelt uncerta<strong>in</strong> about some cod<strong>in</strong>g issues, <strong>the</strong>y discussed <strong>the</strong>se on <strong>the</strong>Google Wave – and <strong>in</strong>variably came to some generally acceptablesolution. After <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> cod<strong>in</strong>g effort was completed, <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>cod<strong>in</strong>g efforts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> English and Russian language doma<strong>in</strong> teamswere checked by HCSS staff for accuracy and cross-languagecomparability. We randomly picked ten studies to determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong>quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cod<strong>in</strong>g. We also picked a few variables (both driversand parameters) <strong>in</strong> Nvivo to see whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> studies that had coded<strong>the</strong>se variables had been coded <strong>in</strong> a uniform way. The results <strong>of</strong> thisvalidation effort were deemed satisfactory for <strong>the</strong> English and Russianlanguage doma<strong>in</strong>s – <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sense that HCSS staff felt comfortable that<strong>the</strong> cod<strong>in</strong>g results adequately reflected <strong>the</strong> key parameters and driverscovered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> studies. In <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>-house nativeCh<strong>in</strong>ese speaker, <strong>the</strong> cod<strong>in</strong>g results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese language doma<strong>in</strong>were checked on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> translated fragments <strong>of</strong> coded text which10 K.
