Key Social Trends (cont)• 28 of the 152 lower super output areas in <strong>Rhondda</strong> <strong>Cynon</strong> <strong>Taf</strong> are inthe top 10% of most deprived areas in Wales (Welsh Index of MultipleDeprivation, 2008).• The highest overall concentration of deprivation in <strong>Rhondda</strong> <strong>Cynon</strong><strong>Taf</strong> is located in the central and northern valleys (Welsh Index ofMultiple Deprivation 2008).• The highest levels of housing deprivation in <strong>Rhondda</strong> <strong>Cynon</strong> <strong>Taf</strong> is inthe central and northern valleys (Welsh Index of MultipleDeprivation, 2008).• <strong>Rhondda</strong> <strong>Cynon</strong> <strong>Taf</strong> has more super output areas in the mostdeprived 10% in Wales for health deprivation than any other localauthority in Wales (Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation, 2008).• 27% of residents in <strong>Rhondda</strong> <strong>Cynon</strong> <strong>Taf</strong> suffer with a limiting longtermillness compared with a Welsh average of just 23% (Office ofNational Statistics).• The highest levels of health deprivation in <strong>Rhondda</strong> <strong>Cynon</strong> <strong>Taf</strong> are inthe central and northern valleys (Welsh Index of MultipleDeprivation, 2008).• 41% of residents in <strong>Rhondda</strong> <strong>Cynon</strong> <strong>Taf</strong> have no academicqualifications compared with a Welsh average of 33% (Office ofNational Statistics).Key Economic Trends• 73% of residents in <strong>Rhondda</strong> <strong>Cynon</strong> <strong>Taf</strong> are economically activecompared with a Welsh average of 75% (Employment Land Review,2008).• The central and northern valleys have above average levels of peopleclaiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) in Wales and the highest level ofclaimants in <strong>Rhondda</strong> <strong>Cynon</strong> <strong>Taf</strong> at 3.1% (Employment Land Review,2008).• The south of the County Borough has an above average level ofeconomic activity and the highest number of economically activeindividuals in <strong>Rhondda</strong> <strong>Cynon</strong> <strong>Taf</strong> at 73% (Employment Land Review,2008).• In 2001 31,000 people residing in <strong>Rhondda</strong> <strong>Cynon</strong> <strong>Taf</strong> workedoutside the local authority. This figure increased to 38,400 in 2004with 19,000 of these commuting to Cardiff (Economic <strong>Development</strong>Prospects and Employment Land Implications, 2008).• The employment structure of <strong>Rhondda</strong> <strong>Cynon</strong> <strong>Taf</strong> is dominated bythree sectors ‘public administration’, ‘manufacturing’ and‘distribution, hotels and restaurants’. Together, these three accountfor 74% of all available jobs in <strong>Rhondda</strong> <strong>Cynon</strong> <strong>Taf</strong> (EmploymentLand Review, 2008).• Between 2000 and 2006 33 hectares of employment land wasdeveloped in <strong>Rhondda</strong> <strong>Cynon</strong> <strong>Taf</strong> at an average rate of 5.5ha perannum (Employment Land Review, 2008).• Convenience (food) sales floor space in Tesco Talbot Green, AsdaAberdare and Tesco Upper Boat are trading 26% above thecompanies average benchmark turnover (Retail Capacity Assessment,2007).Preserving Our Heritage, Building Our Future
