Policy NSA 24 - Green WedgesGreen Wedges have been identified in order to prevent coalescencebetween and within settlements at the following locations:1. Land north of Tonyrefail (Trane Farm, Cae’r-lan Farm) andPenrhiwfer (Mynydd y Gilfach) (part);2. Land between Penrhys (including Penrhys Cemetery) andTylorstown;3. Land between Penrhys and Llwynypia;4. Land between Abernant (including Abernant Golf Course) andCwmbach;5. Land between Fernhill and Mountain Ash, including VictoriaPleasure Park;6.94. Although other policies in the plan are aimed at restricting developmentin the countryside, it is considered necessary to provide additionalprotection to areas of important and vulnerable open land by restrictingdevelopment on the urban fringe and between settlements. Each of theGreen Wedges has been identified following consideration of factors suchas development pressure, urban form and the potential for eventualcoalescence of settlements.6.95. In the Northern Strategy Area Green Wedges have been designatedspecifically to prevent coalescence between and within settlements andto protect vulnerable land and urban form.6.96. Details of each of the designations are contained inthe Green Wedge Topic Paper.6. Land north-east of Coed y Cwm and Grover’s Field (Abercynon);7. Land between Penywaun and Cwmdare / Trecynon.6.92. Within these areas development that prejudices the open nature of theland will not be permitted.6.93. Land on the urban fringe of many of the settlements in Rhondda CynonTaf is vulnerable to speculative development proposals. The spread ofdevelopment into the countryside can result in urbanisation of rural areas, incremental loss of important green space, coalescence of settlements andhave a detrimental effect upon agriculture, the landscape and amenityvalue of land and the individual identity of settlements.Preserving Our Heritage, Building Our Future 89
