traders and an historic urban park. The town is served by excellent publictransportation links which provide access to all parts of the CountyBorough and the wider region.6.111. The LDP will support the regeneration of Pontypridd by providing a policycontext that encourages new residential and commercial developmentwithin the town centre. The Council will support proposals that promotethe reuse of vacant and under used floor space, new retail developmentincluding the provision of cafés and restaurants, the provision of newemployment and residential accommodation, developments that are insustainable locations and improvements to the public realm.6.112. Residential and employment development within the defined town centrewill be permitted where the role of the town centre is supported. Proposalsthat would result in the loss of key services and facilities, retail andcommercial units or other uses important to the role of the town centrewill not be supported by this policy.6.113. The Pontypridd Town Centre Regeneration Strategy (2005) is currentlyunder review. Once the revised strategy is complete, the document will beissued as Supplementary Planning Guidance.Policy SSA 2 -Pontypridd Town Centre EnhancementIn order to improve the streetscape and retail environment inPontypridd Town Centre, parts of Taff Street, Mill Street and HighStreet will be pedestrianised.6.115. This scheme will involve the pedestrianisation of Taff Street southwardsfrom its junction with Crossbrook Street, High Street up to its junction withBroadway, Mill Street and Penuel Lane by means of a prohibition ofdriving. This will exclude traffic for much of the shopping day which willbenefit the environment and ensure the safety of shoppers and visitors tothe town centre. The streetscape of the area will be improved by aprogramme of works in which the street will be resurfaced and new streetfurniture and landscaping features provided. It is anticipated that theseproposals will form an important and integral element of the regenerationstrategy for the town centre.6.114.
