Therehas been rapid growth in internet access primarily dueto phenomenal growth in access to mobile phones.According to Nepal Telecom Authority statistics, almost 70% of the Nepali population has accessto mobile phones with 3G, GPRS and CDMA facilities. The internet is accessed primarily through theuse of mobile phone internet facilities. 6 However,gender-disaggregated data on internet and mobilephone use in Nepal is not available. It is not knownexactly how many Nepali women have access to theinternet and mobile phones.Similarly, there is no available data on howmany people in Nepal have a degree, certificateor training in ICTs. This means there is no data onhow many Nepali women have ICT educationalqualifications. If we look at the employment of women in theICT sector, national level statistics are not available. But taking the case of Nepal Telecom (NT), thestate-owned telecom service provider, gender-disaggregateddata for the past five years (2009-2013)is presented in Tables 1 and 2. While Table 1 illustratesthe percentage of NT employees who arewomen, in Table 2 the data is further disaggregatedto consider women’s employment in technical positionsspecifically. The five-year data shows that although womenhave been employed in the ICT sector in Nepal, thetrend has not been encouraging. The employmentof women in NT has remained static over five years. And even when there are more women employed inNT, they have not been able to occupy significantsenior and decision-making positions.Putting aside the unavailability of nationalgender-disaggregated data, and low employmentof women in ICT sectors like NT, in the past fewyears there have been several efforts made by the6 www.nta.gov.npgovernment, non-governmental organisations andthe private sector to recognise the importance ofwomen in ICTs and to build women’s capacity interms of access, training and participation. As already mentioned, the government of Nepalcelebrated International Girls in ICT Day for the firsttime this year. On this occasion, the director andacting chief of the Nepal Telecommunications Authority(NTA) expressed his commitment to continueencouraging women and girls to pursue ICT careers. The secretary of the Ministry of Information andCommunication (MOIC) repeated the government’scommitment to the empowerment of girls and womenby mainstreaming gender through extensive useof ICTs, and said that the government has made anumber of targeted interventions through severalinitiatives. The NTA made the public aware of InternationalGirls in ICT Day through a public notice publishedon 4 April 2013. The NTA also made a request to ICTrelatedcompanies, government agencies, academicinstitutions, NGOs working in the field of women’sempowerment and other interested organisationsto hold local or national events for InternationalGirls in ICT Day on 25 April 2013, targeting teenagegirls and university students. The NTA additionallyorganised an essay competition on that day on thetheme “The Role of ICT in Empowering Girls andWomen”.A workshop was held on 25 April by MOIC andNTA in collaboration with Equal Access Nepal andpromoted by SPARROW (a private SMS mobilemarketing solution company), 7 on ICT careers, thestatus of women’s participation in ICTs, the use ofICT tools and techniques in personal empowerment, etc. Likewise, the Sambriddhi Nepal Foundation,a social entrepreneur NGO, organised a half-daymotivational programme at the Chundevi HigherSecondary School on the outskirts of Kathmandu inThankot.
